The Stress Response

It has long been established that chronic stress compromises our natural immune system. So much science has gone into examining this phenomenon that it has given rise to the field of medical study and research called psychoneuroimmunology. People react to stressors differently. Some will face them head-on with an insistence that increases the level of stress. Others who try to ignore the stressors by pretending they do not exist unknowingly increase the stress on themselves. Both forms of resistance add to the pressure on the mind and body, and the immune system. Stress need not be dramatic, and often, it is the low-level of chronic stress that can be most harmful to us.

The Relaxation Response

An alternative approach is to take advantage of our natural bodily systems. The stress response comes from our sympathetic nervous system, which is one half of what is called called our autonomic nervous system. The other half is our parasympathetic nervous system which is the source of our relaxation response. While the stress response causes our immune system to shut down, the relaxation response restores it. Studies have shown that learning how to relax can trigger the relaxation response to restore or enhance an immune system compromised by stress. Unfortunately, we do not have as immediate an experience of the relaxation response and, consequently, its benefits to our health are less well known.


The Workshop


Relax Your Way to Health begins with an overview of the Stress Response and how insidious it can be in our modern life, together with an awareness of the Relaxation Response and its functions. This is followed by a hands-on session on how to practise deep relaxation as a way to enhance our immune system and general well-being. Many participants experience having a deeper and more restful sleep as a result. The practice of deep relaxation can also support you in managing your energy and your mood throughout the day, at home and at work.

  • From the Relaxation workshop, I learned the effective ways to relax my body. Though I’ve been practicing qigong for years, this deep relaxation can practice anytime anywhere like sitting in the car, office or lying down, just allocating 10-20 minutes uninterrupted for myself. Being a working mum, I’m experiencing stress and anxiety everyday such as trapped in traffic, meeting deadlines and handling staff grievances. At home, I get triggered and restless easily when things do not go right. Practicing deep relaxation allows me to connect with my body, have quality sleep and a healthier body.

Who Should Attend?


Stress is a natural part of our life. It is wired into our body and our nervous system. If you feel stressed or anxious, it is not difficult to understand that you stand to gain much from this Workshop. If you do not feel you are under stress, perhaps you should attend too, if you are open to having better management of your self and your overall well-being, or just in case the stress in your life is simply well hidden. That many people succumb unexpectedly to stress-induced conditions such as cardiac arrest, shows that low-level, chronic stress is often the hidden and greater danger.
